In the 1890’s and early 1900’s, pioneering meteorologists raised the funds to built a weather observatory on the summit of Ben Nevis, and also a new home for the Observatory Superintendent. Glentower was where the telegraph signals came in from the summit and were transmitted to Liverpool and other main shipping ports, where warnings for gales were provided for ship owners and skippers.

Today, Glentower is possibly Fort William’s most historical link to the past…

The Ben Nevis Weathermen book is a fascinating insight into the work taken to establish an observatory on the summit of the mountain, and how it operated. Glentower keeps stock of this fabulous little job of a book.
